Barbacan

The Barbacan of Pécs is a simple barbican - a fortified outpost or gateway. Barbicans were usually equipped with a water jump, a drawbridge and a rear gate, too.The 15th century bastion has a circle-shaped ground-plan and it belongs to the wall system of the former castle of the bishops.
The building of the Barbacan is usually combined with the well-known commander, Pál Kinizsi who arrived at Pécs in 1498.
From the top of the building in the western corner of the high castle wall, divided by loop-holes, one has a wonderful prospect over the city centre.
